Lime (Calcium Hydroxide) / Calx
Alkaline Agent for Indigo Dyeing & pH Control
Calcium Hydroxide, commonly known as lime or hydrated lime, is a key ingredient in natural dyeing used to create and maintain alkaline conditions. It is especially important in indigo dyeing, where it works alongside a reducing agent (such as fructose) to activate the indigo vat and enable dyeing.
Features
Fine powdered Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂)
Strong, reliable alkaline pH adjuster
Essential for indigo vat preparation
Supports natural and low-toxicity dye systems
Suitable for use with cotton, linen, wool, silk, and other natural fibres
Dyeing Uses
Raises and maintains the high pH required for indigo reduction
Used in fructose vats, 1-2-3 vats, and fermentation-based indigo systems
Helps convert indigo into its soluble form for fiber bonding
Can be used to shift dye colours in alkaline dye baths
Suggested Use
Use in combination with a reducing agent such as fructose powder
Add gradually to achieve desired alkaline pH (typically pH 10–11 for indigo vats)
Dissolve in water before adding to the vat and stir thoroughly
Allow vat to settle before dyeing for best results
Safety Note
Calcium Hydroxide is alkaline and can be irritating to skin and eyes. Wear gloves and avoid inhaling dust. Use in a well-ventilated area. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
An essential material for indigo dyeing, lime provides the stable alkaline environment needed to achieve rich, lasting blues through traditional and contemporary natural dye practices.
