How the Fructose Vat Works
The fructose vat is a modern natural indigo reduction method that uses fructose as the reducing agent and lime to create an alkaline environment. This process converts the insoluble indigo pigment into a soluble form that can penetrate fibres. Once removed from the vat, the dye oxidises in the air and develops its characteristic blue colour.
Watching fabric transform from yellow-green to blue as it oxidises is one of the most magical aspects of indigo dyeing.
