Tannins play a big part in creating colour on cloth.
A vital element when using cellulose fibres. Tannins bond to the fibre delivering a pathway for mordants and colour to form a good bond creating wash fast and light fast results.

Plants high in tannins will generally create good colour as a dye in themselves and they also lend a hand to other dyestuffs to create stronger and deeper colours.

Exploring the reactions with iron can also be a great way to create deeper darker shades through to dark charcoal.

One of my go to staples in the dye studio. I just love the beautiful golds and greens and using pomegranate as a base for layering other colours for deep rich shades.

Both also getting a post dye iron dip to see how they tannins react for the beautiful greens pomegranate offers. And it did not disappoint! Some gorgeous greens came through, especially in the silk.

Fabric samples in order of video
Wool, wool silk blend, raw silk, habotai silk, linen and cotton.

Unfortunately I didn’t choose the best cotton fabric for these samples so I will also do this again with some various cellulose fibres to see how deep the colour can go.

There was not much difference in results with a little stronger colour in some of the raw dye samples and some variation in hue. All in all I am very happy with the quality and depth of both and can see the benefit in time and cost when using the extract.
I really do love using pomegranate as a base and as a dye blanket in eco printing with iron. Such lovely greens!

I have both the raw and extract in stock if you’d like to try this beautiful dye. Made from captured food waste, it is both sustainable and 100% non toxic.
Pomegranate skin powder is also used as a skin care product so it’s a great colour to wear close to your skin!

The warm colours of Cutch

Acacia catechu, full of beautiful tannins producing a gorgeous pallette of earthy browns.

This is the extract on wool, silk, cotton and linen...

The extract just melts so beautifully into the water and comes alive with its earthy almost sweet tea like smell.

Acacia catechu is also used in ayurvedic medicine for swelling and pain and thought to have antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Even better to wear this beautiful plant close to your skin!

Walnut Hull Powder, made from the dried outer shells (hulls) of the Juglans regia tree, is a powerful natural dye prized for its deep brown, warm taupe, and greyish neutral tones. Naturally high in tannins, it can be used without a mordant and also serves as a subtle tannin source for preparing cellulose fibres like cotton and linen.

An earthy rich high tannin dye, a must have in the dye studio!
Perfect for creating deep dark browns/charcoals when used with Iron.

Cooper Sulphate
The bringer of beautiful greens! Used as a mordant or modifier, Copper sulphate can brighten and deepen greens. Especially when used with eco printing. Only a little is needed to create unique results.

This weekend we had some play time in the studio with natural dye extracts and habotai silk.

Using Marigold, Lac and Annatto for a gorgeous warm spectrum. They blended so beautifully.

Experimenting with some Shibori folding and dip dyeing and an hour steam.
Really happy with the potency of these extracts. The results were so bright and pretty as well as some gorgeous pastels.

They also smelled delicious! Marigold in particular also has anti microbial properties so an extra element of earthy goodness imbued in these colour ways.

Pomegranate peel

A favourite dyestuff of mine. High in tannins, it can is great to use with cellulose fibres. Used as a pre tannin to boost other dyestuffs and and add to depth and longevity, or in its own to create soft yellow/gold tones and a lovely olivey greens when used with a touch of iron.

The secret to vibrant, long-lasting natural colour?

It all starts with SCOURING 🫧

Scouring removes oils, waxes, sizing and impurities from fabric, allowing natural dyes and mordants to bind more effectively.
Skipping this step can lead to dull, uneven or patchy results – in mordanting and the dye pot.

Think of it as prepping a canvas before painting

Clean fibre = strong, rich and lasting colour.

Scouring is basically a hot wash, using the appropriate detergent for the fibre and heating it for about an hour.
You will see a lot come off some fabrics and they may need a double scour to get it nice and clean.

Henna

Lawsonia inermis

Native to the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and surprisingly Australia! (If anyone finds it growing wild in Australia I’d be very interested to try some!)

Henna has been used traditionally throughout Africa and Asia for centuries to colour hair, skin in beautiful mehndi designs and on cloth.
Also used as medicine and ceremonial ways this plant holds a rich history and continues to bring its magic to the world today.

I am currently stocking henna powder and also raw indigo powder if you want to mix your own hair colouring or use alone for fabrics.

Henna will give a lovely earthy brown to green tones on cloth and is great to use alongside other dyes to create richer deeper tones.

It’s so lovely to find out what your local leaves will create! A sweet creative time with my mum while on a little holiday, introducing her to the joy of eco printing.
She lives in a beautiful area of the Atherton Tablelands where we found some very lovely colours emerging from the leaves around her bush land block.
And some quite amazing patterns come through!
We used calico and some beautiful silk she’s had tucked away from her travels in India 30 something years ago!

I love upcycling! Natural dyes are such a nice way to bring some colour and special character to clothing that may be a little dull or not quite to taste.

I also am a bit addicted to op shopping so it’s a great excuse for me to find some things and give them a new life!

What do you think of this pink? Im happy to see these extract keep giving. This was a mix of madder and cutch that I had sitting around from previous dye baths that I mixed together.

Lac is a potent dye made from the secretions of the Laccifer Lacca insect that creates a scale apon branches which is then harvested and used in many ways. Shellac as a lacquer, in confectionary and food, as a medicine, and of course a dye.

Being very sensitive to Ph the colour can be shifted quite easily and is very light and wash fast on protein fibres. A little goes a long way.

Annatto \ Achiote / Lipstick plant

Bixa orellana is a tropical shrub native to
Central and South America where it is a prized plant for its colour, as a paint, dye for food and textiles and a spice.

Its rich red orange colour comes from a waxy coating around its seeds that are encased by a lovely red fluffy pod.

As a child I loved picking these pods and being so delighted to use a little paint brush and paint myself with its bright orange colour. Natural lipstick that is also tasty!

I currently have both the powdered seed dye powder and also a soluble extract for greater ease and potency.

Yielding soft yellows to bright orange/red depending on fabric and mordant combinations. I even saw a lovely pink emerge on linen when using the extract.
Definitely a fun plant to work with!
